The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Actually, we don't know if Creation really is an all-new engine. My guess is that they realised there was a lot of stigma surrounding Gamebryo, so when they updated the old Gamebryo technology, they renamed the thing for PR purposes. It seems far more likely than writing an entirely new engine from scratch, anyway.[/quote]Well you know it really doesn't matter, cause by the screenshots there is no resemblance to Gamebryo...at all.The animation should be a lot better, being that there using Havok (Assassin creed 2)too.

It seems they might have gotten some of their inspiration from Diablo 2, what with "barbarian" shouts and the mountain you have to climb to reach grey beards a la Mount Arireat and the three warriors (and you know there will be something you have to fight up there too). Maybe not but I'm getting that impression.

I think they might hype this shout thing some more and do a Kinect integration as the mandatory MS exclusive addon this time around.

Also, lol at the article stating that tense is not really necessary in a language. Sounds like they're taking it far enough for their purposes though.

uhhh... no.

try early 80s in Ultima... thats where they got this idea from

That would be hilarious. The mental image of people shouting at their TVs to activate abilities is quite satisfying.

I think you might be giving Bethesda too much credit there.

well, you cannot deny that ultima did the whole "words of magic" thing WAY before beth is.

and of course it will be heralded as "next gen" when in reality they are like 30 years late to the game.

which is typical for beth. take something that is 20+ years old, make it shiny, and call it next gen.

You now need to time your blocks.

Guaranteed to be annoying as hell.

Stealth in Skyrim is a little deeper. Enemies don't suddenly move from passive to aggressive. There is now an interim "Alert" phase, so you'll have a chance to hide again and wait for them to forget about you.

Prepare for weird glitches - I'm yet to see any game implement stealth properly, apart from maybe Thief series.

Everything else sounds like they're making a fantasy-themed FPS. Maybe people will finally stop calling it an RPG.

"Flourish attacks appear for skillful kills, giving you a nice visual treat as you execute an enemy."

So... zoomed in slow-motion? I hate that stuff.

Well, at least they are trying to address the issue of how boring combat is in their games. But hackin' and slashin' away while running backwards until the enemy is dead is like Bethesda's signature.

What's funny is it is pretty realistic, in a sense.

The whole hacking and slashing while running backwards thing.

Unless you like getting stabbed in the face the first second.

Who am I kidding? There will never be a game with truely realistic combat. The closest thing possible is a game of Soul Caliber with Health turned all the way down to 10%.

Sigh, I hope it isn't like this. Shouldn't flourish attacks be fast and awesome? It's like slow mo when using Fast Shot.

Sounds like you're very sure of that. How do you know where Beth got this idea from?

I don't have an issue with it not being realistic, actually. That could be boring if you think about it. Just make it fun and not get boring too fast.

I can't help but remember Jedi Knight II, where I would save before every jedi battle just so I could play it again and again.

Someone never played Bushido Blade.

I agree Jedi Knight had some really nice sword fighting particularly for such an old game.

Wow, thanks. was thinking of this game reading the discussion but couldn't remember the name. Loved that game, they should do a new one.

Bushido Blade II was the shit. Hours of my childhood spent playing that over and over

another article on the combat

basically the same info, but a few points that the other one didn't mention:

- you can dual-wield weapons.

- there is a button for sprinting.

- while using a bow, you can knock down people in melee to get a shot off.

- two shout abilities mentioned: slow time and call a dragon to aid you.

I have to say, not a single one of these changes sounds bad to me.

Oh boy, the slow time and dragon call sounds like some gimmicky shit. Of course one should see how it looks before making any conclusions, but it sure sounds shitty to me.

Uh? Doesn't FO3 has the same system? Or there is an extra phase between "hidden" and "caution"?
