The Witcher Thread

I never notice framerate drops unless the picture really stutters. I don't care if a game runs with 60 or 29 fps, I just don't see the difference.
I still think it looks nice enough. It's an RPG, it doesn't need bleeding edge graphics as long as it gets the rollplaying elements right. I agree that the system requirements are probably too high, though.

I play with e8400, 3.25GB DDR2 800 RAM and a single 8800GTS 512 with everything maxed out, including 4xAA. I've yet to notice any performance issues. Frame rate stays mostly between 50-70, sometimes it drops to 40's.
Nor do I have any complaints about how it looks. It's a visual delight if you ask me. Well ok, there aren't some of the fancy effects that games nowadays use, but the artwork is incredible and it beats most games in that area.

Is it only me or do the combat system suck donkey balls?

I couldn't stand it, it was so fucking stiff. Ruined what seemed to be a good game for me :/

The only problem I have with The Witcher is that the Enhanced Edition is not sold here where I live, and most likely never will. Looks like I have to order it from overseas.

On that note, I'm looking for the UK version, not the American version. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two in regards to the appearance of the box?

I for one thinks that it's the perfect blend of stat based combat and action. And it looks rather spectacular if you ask me. I'm really beginning to enjoy the game now ( and I'm not even done with Chapter 1, I don't play that much ).

Truly a great game. It looked much worse from the start. Then it started to get better the more I play it. I'm officially hooked now. Dialogue is pretty good too. This game is where I first heard someone say to me "your mother sucks dwarf cock". Gotta respect that. I really didn't expect language like that from a fantasy RPG. Also storyline is probably strongest of any game I've played since VTM : Bloodlines.

Great game and the fighting took some getting used to. The dialogue in the first was hilarious, if I heard another "Geralt?!" inappropriately blurted out during conversations with NPCs I was going to take my chair and throw it across the room. It is good that they fixed that.

Im kind off baffled that BIOWARE didn't come up with game similar to this. I have to constantly remind myself this has been done with AURORA engine. And people who complain about combat, I can only say its way quantum leap over NWN1 one.
The graphics, maps and interaction is well done, wish Obsidian would take notes from these guys.

More than 80% of render engine was rewritten, so it doesn't really have too much in common with Aurora.

But your point with Obsidian stands, NWN2 is technical travesty.

QFTFT. I LOVE combat in this game.

So... for a guy like me who doesn't know anything about the witcher but is curious about the hype and good reviews... Is it worth picking up?

Sure, but don't expect too much. It get's better the further you go.

BTW they released another mod. Another mod about getting Dandelion out of trouble. GODDAMNIT. It's a third mod in a row about this.

Since I work for Witcher wiki, I'll answer that. Grap the NA version. There is a very simple patch that will erase any difference between EU or NA versions. If you are a purist, there are DLs available for the original Polish dialogue with English sub that actually included more BG story explanations in conversations.

Cool, thanks for the info! This will help loads.

I'm not a purist, but that "Polish speech, English subs" mod might be interesting to try out.

That's Jaskier for you. Thinking with his penis rather than brain.

Started this a few days ago. It sucked me in right away with that awesome CG into. I made it to Vizima and I really wish I had more time to play.

Cool, Act II is the most confusing chapter for most players, since the quest is quite convoluted.

It's fun trying to figure out the mystery yourself.

Btw, you can't get back to the outskirts, so I hope you grabbed everything you need.

I'll say one thing though. I know it's probably a matter of preference but it's annoying to have PC say his lines exactly as they appear. It takes me out of the experience to have my character atually speak the lines anyway but having him say exactly what I just read is annoying. It's not a big deal, especially since you can skip them but I just don't see the point.
