Will Fallout 3 be remembered?

Will Fallout 3 be remembered in 10 years' time?

I actually don't think it will. Initially, I thought it would. But playing it again... it's aged VERY poorly for a game that's just 7 years old. It was on the verge of being dated when it came out, really, but now, it's just kind of sad. Still kind of enjoyable in its own way, mind you, but in 20 years... no. It won't be remembered as a good Fallout game, as a good RPG, or a good FPS. It won't be remembered because it did nothing particularly well.

Fallout 3 works almost purely on visuals, so if those age ... it's loosing its appeal. And neither Fallout 3 nor Oblivion aged really well. On the other side this isn't just about 3D graphics to say that. For example Jedi Knight II still plays and feels pretty awesome even after all those years. While Fallou 3 and Oblivion ... just looks ugly.

Fallout 3's appeal is in traversing the world, discovering things and doing quests. Not in the visuals, it never was in the visuals. It also will never look as bad as Playstation 1 games which are so bad they're unplayable.

Any yet here I am playing PS1 games for the first time with no problems (or nostalgia). The visuals for the most part are fine.

It's appeal is that you can walk around and shoot things. Fallout 4 will replace its throne in that regard, and then it will be forgotten, people looking back on it as wow, how did I manage to play a game that looked and played that badly?

Depends on the definition of "remembered". I am fairly sure there will be still people playing it. People also said the Oblivion would die after the release of Skyrim. Well, it might smell funny, but it's certainly not dead. People are still playing it, there are still new mods for Oblivion and there are still active forums for Oblivion (not to forget about Morrowind). I even know a few people that came back to Oblivion cause they were unhappy with Skyrim. And I see a lot of games that are newer where there is absolutely no activity.

So, maybe Fallout 3 will not be remembered by the masses but it might have its niche.

Personally, I had a fun time with FO3, it's different than 1 and 2 but it had its moments. There are certainly games, that I try harder to forget.

It's the aesthetics and humour that people will remember. The game itself? I imagine nostalgia goggles will start to fall apart on it after 5 or 10 years. The humour, Pip-Boy, vault boy, etc? That'll last longer, especially with 4 coming.

Many people in this thread can't even go and play Fallout 3 now, much less 10 years from now. Games like Fallout 1 and 2 have aged much better. This is the kind of audience they cater to though.

I see a trend where a large number of people playing these games don't care about the lore in any way. They don't seem to appreciate world building or any sense of realism. These people don't care about video games actually improving, being more highly regarded as something beyond kids stuff with a nonsensical plot, awful dialog, and no attention to detail. In the comments they speak of NMA. One person mentioned something along the lines of NMA Flamelord. Catchy title.

If it weren't for Fallout 3, I would never have had the fortune of playing the first Fallout.
Now, five years later, Fallout 3 (modded) is the only game I play. Yes: I've been playing Fallout 3 since 2010 and never get tired of it.

That link led me to the one of the best deconstructions of what makes FO3 the most nonsensical RPG's of this decade (besides one of the good ones I remember reading on NMA). I have never seen the Shamus review - Holy Shit was that amazing.

Those are the types of things I was noticing, playing it back in 2008, trying my damnedest to cringe my way through it. Folks, I couldn't do it - just could NOT take one more minute of that game's vapid, poorly thought out setting. My tipping point was probably a little ways after Megaton where I stopped and never finished it to this day. I knew the "Dad Quest" was retarded (from reading spoilers throughout the years), but WOW, just Wow... to the rest of the really dumb 'consequences' and quests and bland characters throughout.

Fallout being 'saved' and brought back from near death may have been an interesting idea in hindsight, but it was basically brought back and put on permanent life support. Jesus...

Of course it will not be remembered forever. Even Fallout 1 will be forgotten in 1000 years, maybe even 100 years.
Question is for 2018. Of course it will be remembered in 3 years. It will also be remembered after Fallout 4.
Although, it will slowly sink into shadow after Fallout 5, Fallout 6 and Fallout 7 will be released, copying the formula with better pixels.

In 1000 years Fallout will be all the rage in Post Apocalyptic New New York City.

1000 years? Did you see that nuclear explosion in China that some have theorized was caused by American Hackers? I'll say we are heading to Mad Max land quite fast....

Maybe we will have rebuilt by then. Somewhat like Judge Dredd and the Cursed Earth.

I haven't seen any rumors of American Hacker activity related to the Chinese explosion. Interesting theory.

Todd Howard: The First Person Shooting "was meh..."

Pete Hines: "having played Fallout 3 again recently I keep...hitting the button to leave dialogue"

So according to their game director and head of PR, Fallout 3's shooting mechanics sucked and the dialogue was boring. It's good to know I agree with them on something.

We can only hope that Fallout 3 will be remembered, it was a fantastic game for me. I find myself still enjoying Fallout 1 & 2 just as much as I did prior to the release of Fallout 3 so I have high hopes that it will be remembered.

Seeing as this game gets so many positive opinions, and yet so many negative opinions, it may as well just be remembered as the "oddball" of the series.

It will be remembered, the shittiest game there is, the mediocre game that wasn't fallout, the Holy Grail of RPG, a damn good game.

I believe Ride to Hell: Retribution is the shittiest game there is.

Fallout 3 may be bad but it's not RTH:R bad.

Remembered as happening but not so as a game because there's not much games this deep was in mid-to-end 00's but not now with titles like Mad Max and even Wasteland 2(I hated it though).

Although F3 is still pretty fun game.

To add my 5 cents to your nice post, when you say realism I feel it would be more accurate to talk about verisimilitude. A setting like Fallout doesn't necessarily require a lot of realism, outside of the basics, like humans requiring food, water and the like. Even a world or setting that seems highly unrealistic from a scientific standpoint can be believable as long it is consistent within it's own framework. This obviously doesn't apply when you talk about simulations, like a tank-sim where as much as possible should be grounded on the physics in real life, with a few limitations.
