It's interesting to me that Larian seems to be sticking to a certain theme that was prevalent in the previous Baldur's Gate games and that is the player character having a darkness growing within them that the player character can either reject or embrace. In the first two Bladur's Gate games it was the player character being the child of Bhaal and carrying some of his evil and divine essences that grew stronger the more powerful the player character became and also with taking down their Bhaalspawn siblings. In Baldur's Gate 3 it's the illithid tadpole and it's growing power and intellect trying to overtake and influence the player characters mind and outlook.

I hope that you can decide to play as Illithid. Would be certainly an interesting point of view. And powers.

Swen from Lairan did a live-stream of BG3 showing off stuff. It's a bit frustrating watching him play but otherwise it's pretty cool.

This is possibly my most anticipated upcoming game. I never played d&d tabletop, but the rules and the game world are so fleshed out that i feel it makes a great base for a video game, as the devs don't have to try and reinvent something that's already well established and can concentrate on making engaging content. I already had a blast with bg1,bg2 , nwn, nwn2; planning party layout, building characters, epic boss fights... And now this get's paired with Larian games verticality and interactive environment. That opens up so many possibilities for different builds and party groupings, that i'm a bit worried that this might end up too hard to balance out properly, as divinity had a much lesser assortment of skills and the game already had many possibilities to engage different situations.
I do wonder about d&d 5th edition. I heard it's a bit more streamlined, but maybe that's for the better when the game already has verticality and interactive environment as an addition to mechanics of d&d.

So, the early access is out. Anyone trying it out officially?

Full disclosure: I yarred for a GOG copy to try it out. I don't have the time to give feedback for Early Access but I wanted to try it out. Just got my first actual companion in the first area.

Baldur's Gate 3 is complicated to boot. The options, everything, it will take dozens of hours to beat.

Combat is tactical, but slow as hell due to nature of DnD. Not sure what to think about it. Options are good, but I think it may be too much.

I think it's not a Baldur's Gate game, in the same way that FO3 is not a Fallout game; in the same way that Wasteland 2 & 3 are not Wasteland games... despite all of these—even FO3— being reasonably good games on their own merits.

BG3 (to me) looks like a Dragon Age clone.

On the visual side... I would have preferred something a bit more recognizably derived from, and in keeping with BG2.

It directly builds on top of D:OS 2. This is what I am getting in terms of the game's presentation. It looks so much like it. That is not a bad thing necessarily as D:OS 2 only real strong point is presentation, but the reviewer further mentions DnD Lite and pacing issues. You can expect a good-looking game that also runs well. But that's not all there is to an RPG, now is there?...

Combat will be slow, and personally, I don't think that's a good thing. Relying more on cinematic animations rather than tactical complexity only makes the whole thing feel repetitive. Some flair when it come to animations and overall presentation is good, but always comes secondary to satisfying and rich gameplay/story-telling.

I think Larian might have been better off just making their own thing. A lot of people do give them praise, but if I have to be completely honest, I think a lot of them are just easily impressed with visuals.

I do think they make decent games. But I have to say as great as D:OS 2 was I think it was in many cases very formulaic. For example the map layout which was for the most party really just one giant square that you explore. The story was great. The gameplay not as tactical as it seems though. I mean it's decent for a turn based game. But at some point again, it becomes formulaic. At some point skills that allow you to gain mobility become like the top priority and everything that can give you one way or another >action points< during a fight. I really hope they would have chosen more debth for BG3. But it seems like yeah they apply the D:OS 2 formula on Baldurs Gate. Not the worst thing in the world. But also not what I hopped for. As Giz said. Looks very similar to D:OS 2. But I guess that was to be expected.

It had a great first Act. Only that one managed to use the engine of the game to it's fullest potential. It also featured the best encounters and the best writing the game had.

It's a steady downhill from there.
