busted.
because he worked on the set of the movie, dude read the order more and stop lurking NMA.

In the Officially Licensed Comics from the 80s (which are Canon because License Holder = Canon Definer or so people keep claiming) the aliens may have been used by the predators for sport, but they were also biological weapons employed by the space jockeys. Unclear whether they originated as either.

depends. There are two factions here really. Those which enjoy the comics and those which see only what is mentioned in the movies as "Canon" and everything in the comics as "semi-canon" because honestly, some of them also contradict each other. Take the comics which are about infestations on earth or those comics where newt is still alive and an adult girl/teenager.

Both the Alien and predator worlds are for me two separate franchises. The AvP-Comics are a nice "what if" thing. But nothing more then that. The AvP movies are not worth to be called either Alien or Predator movies. They are just turd. The AvP movies damaged both Alien and Predator movies because both are excellent franchises each with their own quality. So please ... don't call AvP canon. Every time someone says that it really hurts and somewhere an Xenomorph and Predator die cruelsome deaths.

In any case Prometheus should be Less Than Canon since officially it's not even part of the franchise, if I'm not misinformed.

I was talking to an acquaintance today about Prometheus, and he made a good point I hadn't thought of myself.

[spoiler:973197dfe8]The story of the movie is almost exactly the same as the Lovecraft story "At the Mountains of Madness": a team of scientists on an expedition stumbles upon the remains of the civilization of the species that created mankind -- a species that, as it turns out, isn't quite dead yet. But the civilization of mankind's creators was destroyed by one of their own monstrous creations.[/spoiler:973197dfe8]

That is all.

It's ridiculous to compare the worst aspect of the AvP franchise with the best aspect of the Predator and Alien franchise (the movies that is). There's an Alien reference in Predator 2 btw.

AvP (movies) are shit. Enough said. They are not part of the Alien and/or Predator franchise in my eyes. Because they are a disgrace to it.

No clue if he was serious or not.

A damn shame, I much rather would have liked to see that movie.

I'd probably see that movie too but...cancelled it because he felt it was too similar? That's the worst excuse for quitting I've ever heard. 90% of Hollywood movies are too similar, but that doesn't stop them. It doesn't matter if it's similar, just if it's better.

well, it's possible del toro is more of an artist than a commercial whore.

from the wiki:

Director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Matthew Robbins wrote a screenplay based on Lovecraft's story, but in 2006 had trouble getting Warner Bros. to finance the project. Del Toro wrote, "The studio is very nervous about the cost and it not having a love story or a happy ending, but it's impossible to do either in the Lovecraft universe."[25] In July 2010 it was announced that the film would be made in 3D and that James Cameron would become producer,[26] and Tom Cruise was attached to star.[27] This "was a startling prospect considering Lovecraft's tale had long been considered unfilmable."[27] Del Toro confirmed that the film would begin production as early as May 2011 and start filming in June.[28] However, in March 2011, it was announced that "Universal refused to greenlight the project due to del Toro's insistence that it be released with an R rating rather than a PG-13."[27] According to Salon.com, "Universal wants to hold onto the project in the event that it changes its mind and decides to make it later, either as an R or PG-13 movie. But del Toro is already trying to set up Mountains at another studio (possibly 20th Century Fox).[27] However, on April 30, 2012, del Toro posted that, due to the resemblance in premise with director Ridley Scott's film, Prometheus, the project would probably face a "long pause -if not demise".[29] The film's current status is unknown.[30]

Or more of a whining crybaby quitter.

It's probably not his fault though. I'm sure the dimwitted Hollywood greenlighters were looking for an excuse to kill the project. Still, At the Mountains of Madness...starring Tom Cruise. Odd.

I'd switch to Shadow Out of Time. That story could make a great movie.

This movie still carries the Jebus Award for the depiction of the most Stupid Scientists and Characters without Any Depth or Personality (or basic humanity), though. A proud achievement if there ever was one.

In most of Scott's movies, I find at least one or two people whom I can form a connection to, and hence not root for the 'bad guys' to win. This movie is, however, the absolute nadir when it comes to character writing. Never have I seen a movie where I hated each and every one of the protagonists ('cept maybe the cyborg) so thouroughly.

Let's take the geologist as case in point. He starts of as a tough, dumb asshole ("I'm only in it for the money! I don't even know why I'm here!" - a great candidate for a hand-picked science crew to make first contact with aliens if I've ever seen one), then he turns into a über-tech-guy with his flying 3D-map orbs, then he turns into a mayor pussy ("Oh no! A 50 000-year old DEAD BODY! RUN!"), and then he just turns incredibly stupid (as in, the guy with the 3D map of the entire facility and video-comm uplink to the ship is the one getting lost. GENIUS). So... Who IS this character? Could Scott make it any more goddamn obvious that he's just a McGuffin' to advance the plot? He fits into any damn spot Scott needs a redshirt. This movie is so incredibly insulting to my intelligence I fumed througout.

I'm left wondering who Scott made this movie for. Sci-Fi fans? Fuck no. There's not a sci-fi fan in the world that wasn't going to be pissed off by the complete and utter lack of understanding of even the most basic scientific principles in this movie. Adults? Fuck no, there's not an adult in the planet that wouldn't be insulted by the woefully bad character writing and exposition in this movie. Human beings? Fuck no, there's not a person in the world that would identify with the fucktard characters Scott has created.

If even there was a movie that deserved to tank, and tank horribly, it's this one. Unfortunately, though, the hype machine is going to carry this one through. It's depressing.
