What was your first RPG?

I mean, have you actually played them? They are way more than a simple beauty contest. There's actually strategy in it. Even moves that are crap in normal play become awesome in contests. And Gen 3 really didn't removed anything from Gen 2 besides the day and night cycle, so don't really get where this complaint is coming from.
I know I tried them when they came out and disliked it. I think my issue with the newer games is that it seemed like I felt spoiled by the additions I perceived in Gen 2 and then Gen 3 came out and the only thing I cared much about was the new HMs, the bikes, and running shoes. It felt like Gen 2 did so much forward and then everything after was just slowing down (whether it is that or not, that's how I felt about it). Like I said, you guys can probably objectively stomp my ass with Pokemon and which gen did shit best. But there was a magic about Gen 2 I cannot find in the newer games.

I was never into the contests beyond completionist mentality (I got all the paintings in the Museum). But the Secret Bases were pretty fun. The Revamped version of Secret bases in ORAS were even better, specially for competitive team building, just scan a bunch of Blissey Bases and you can Max Level any team in a few hours.

That's because Gen 1 was a disaster when it came to gameplay mechanics and balance (psychic was immune to ghost when the former should be weaker to the latter, that bad). Any gen afterwards would feel like an huge jump in quality because there was so much to fix from Gen 1. Gen 3 and onwards feel like smaller steps in quality compared to Gen 2 because Gen 2 fixed most of the major issues of Gen 1.

They were ok for when they came out and what they were, but it had a lot of issues and the series has actually come a long way since then.

The physical/special split in Gen 4 is easily my favorite change in any generation. It fixed so much wrong with a lot of Pokemon, like Gengar finally being able to use Shadow Ball effectively. Because Ghost was for some reason physical prior to Gen 4 and Gengar had good special attack but trash attack.

I kicked my buddies ass with Abra's final form with ease. I had Blue and he had Red. My Squirtle splooged all over his Charizard because he only leveled his main while I equally leveled my whole roster, mainly comprised of Ghost and Psychic types.

Never noticed this thread.

My first rpg was Fallout. And I'm really happy it was.

Diablo is a continuously-click-left-and-occasionnally-click-righ-like.
Have you played any Rogue-likes? There is no mouse, but you click the keys in much the same way. Diablo had level randomization, and the end all gist of the gameplay was to further descend and kill monsters. It's basically Isometric Rogue—sans ASCII.

Mine was Arcanum which got me hooked instantly. Soon after that I bought Baldur's Gate and Fallout and the rest is history. The stupid thing though is that there hasn't been any good rpg:s since way back then.

My first experience was FF8 back when my uncles used to play it.

Watched them and really liked the looks of it, as I got older and found a bit more freedom with picking my own video games I kept an eye out for the series and found a second hand copy of FF9 in gamestation and snapped it up.

Played it and realised it was nothing like FF8 but I loved it and it's still my favourite rpg to date :)

The song I sing
will tell the tale
of a cold and wintery day.

When evil fled
and brave men bled
the Dark One came to stay.

Of castle walls
and torchlit halls
and a price men had to pay.

Till men of old
for blood and gold
had rescued Skara Brae!

Bard's Tale muthafuckas!

Fallout 2. Broke my ankle playing rugby, was off work and had no money and none coming in. Bought it on offer for £5 (I think). Instantly hooked.

Dragon Age: Origins on the 360. I don't count any of the LoZ games I played on my brother's N64 because all I ever did was kick chickens on his saves.

Got into gaming after my dad got me an old xbox with Civ:Revolution. The three games I got after that were DA:O, Skyrim and Gaylo. Didn't appreciate the better parts of Origins when I was a kid, I just found it funny that I could bang like 50 women and get away with it. It remains in my top 10 even if it is a clunky piece of shit that is absolutely carried by the story, dialogues and characters inside the game.

2 rpgs.... Knights of the Old Republic and Morrowind ... I was still very young ( not even 10 ) but i was old enough to still run around and see what it was like
