I would say it's a "All X are Y but not all Y are X" kind of thing, I knew plenty of emotions kids in school who just minded their own business. It's where that kinda stuff overlaps with theater kids where you really need to get worried.

Zim is fun enough, but it is not maximum Jhonen Vasques emo tier, if you want to go serious, try Johnny the Homicidal Maniac - or even deeper, Happy Noodle Boy
Zegh is right. Also, Zim is one of those shows where I don't know if I'll appreciate it now like I used to. I found it funny when I was younger but I'm not sure that'd be the case today and I really don't want to ruin that nostalgia of it.
I have the exact same feeling. A lot of Zim rely on the random-humor, sudden outbursts etc, that have since become internet-norm.
Some moments had me crying though, "IT WAS MEEE! I WAS THE TURKEY ALL ALOOONG!"
I still remember this scene very specifically and still think it's funny.
